After returning to competition after a year-long layoff, Serena Williams, who has been an unstoppable force for the greater part of 20 years, will begin her most recent attempt at Wimbledon next week to set a record-equaling twenty fourth Grand Slam.

Williams and Tunisian Ons Jabeur played doubles at the
Eastbourne International this week, but the former world number one hasn't
competed in a competitive singles match since limping out of the first round of
the grasscourt major last year due to injury.
Even the top experts in the sport are baffled about what
fans may expect from her when she walks the court at Wimbledon, where she has
won seven singles titles.
Seven-time major champion and ESPN analyst John McEnroe
said, "She might lose in the first round or win the championship."
After an emotional departure from the All England Club a
year prior, the 40-year-old fell to 1,208th in the rankings. She needed time to
recover from a hamstring injury and requested a wildcard entrance for the
match.
Williams told reporters earlier this week that she was
taking her comeback "one day at a time" and acknowledged that she
occasionally had second thoughts about competing.
She said, "I love tennis and I enjoy playing; else, I
wouldn't be out here."

Williams and Jabeur came back from a set down to win their
Eastbourne women's doubles opening, and they then won in straight sets on
Wednesday in the quarterfinals before the Tunisian got hurt and they had to
quit.
Since the American champion raised a significant trophy at
the Australian Open in 2017, Williams has been chasing an elusive twenty-fourth
Grand Slam singles victory, which could put her on the same level as
record-holder Margaret Court.
Since giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017, she has
come agonisingly close to achieving that milestone, including in four Grand
Slam finals.
Even for tennis' toughest competitor, returning to
competition after a year away is a Herculean task.
According to ESPN analyst and 18-time Grand Slam winner
Chris Evert, "it takes a while for your tennis instincts and your tennis
IQ to come back when you don't play for a long time."
Just by watching her play doubles, it's difficult to predict
how she will perform in singles.
Iga Swiatek of Poland, the current world number one, is a
strong favourite and is riding a 35-match winning streak that includes her
second French Open victory earlier this month. Williams is facing long odds to
win the Venus Rosewater Dish.
"The power is there, and the serve looks good. She's
participating in the event, which excites me, and I think it's terrific for
everyone," said Evert.
But it's a question mark, you know.
Monday marks the start of Wimbledon's main tournament.
